Can you believe in miracles?

[Update: Added another photo below, courtesy of high school and beyond friend, Nancy Olson. Also corrected anniversary date mistake. Oops.]

Thirty one years ago today tomorrow, Barb stood in front of a hard-of-hearing minister who spent three-fourths of his time marrying her to a guy named Gary. After objections from the crowd in attendance, the minister spent the rest of the time marrying Barb to a guy named Glenn. Which leads to a few questions:

Where has Gary been for the last 31 years?

Have Barb and Glenn been living in sin for 23 of 31 years?

And here's the biggest mystery question:

How has Barb put up with Glenn for so long? That alone is a miracle.

Happy Anniversary, Barb.

You are amazing. Every day.

P.S. Glad your eyebrows grew back.

Update: Below is a scanned photograph of The Western gang posing in front of the apartment where Barb and I met, courtesy of Nancy Olson. (Note the image size. It was obviously taken a few decades ago.) How she found this image so quickly is a mystery, but thank you!

Nancy is one of the two reasons that I met Barb. Nancy was rooming with Sharon (the blonde in the center, unfortunately Nancy is taking the picture). Sharon was taking a class with Barb. Barb's studio apartment didn't have a kitchen, so she went to Sharon's to make a meal. I went to say "Hi" to Nancy, Barb and my paths crossed, and here we are 34 years later. Getting old friends back together, again..... virtually.

BTW, it was love a first sight for me. Yep, it does happen. I can attest to that. However, Barb took her sweet time, dating a horde of guys before deciding I might be the guy for her. But Barb didn't become convinced until AFTER I had given up on her, and had left for Alaska with my cousin, Marilyn, and her husband, Tom, to lick my wounds for a while. (Note: Tom was my good friend in college and I was the reason he met my cousin, so there is symmetry in this world if you look for it.)

So my dear "Gary",

You love all the tender and cute words you wrote, even though our "31st Anniversary" is really tomorrow September 22nd! I'm impressed and touched that you remembered early.

To add to your description, there was the loud peel of thunder when the minister said "What God puts together, let no man put asunder." Skies were clear and blue as all attending gazed upward in astonishment or trembling while they were thinking "What the heck?". We just figured it was a good omen and have never had any doubts since.

So here's my mystery question:

How does Glenn manage to have the perfect combination of quirkiness, playfulness and brilliance to make Barb's life more amazing than her wildest dreams?

P.S. This is my favorite picture of you. Captures your essence. The eyebrows are good too!

It's tomorrow, huh? Oops. Got anxious to celebrate.
That was classic Dad:). Unbeknownst to you, my friends and I have awarded you both two awards inspired by obervations growing up. #1-you are the weirdest parents and couple, and #2-you're a beautiful demonstration of a marriage filled with genuine adoration and fun. You've been an example to all of us. But you're still weirdos.
31 years huh. Wow. I have to agree with your daughter...I always thought you were a weird couple..Barb was (and is) so gorgeous. But Glenn, Barb is right. You are a perfect blend of quirkiness and brilliance. And together, you are perfect. Here's to another 31 years!!! I am glad I was there to celebrate the day.
Karol, you speak like a true quirk! I, too, am glad you were there but am even more happy you are here with us now.
Congrats! I don't believe I've ever received credit for introducing you two! Remember, I was in the Communications Department at WWSC with Barb, and Glenn game up to visit all of us going to school there. After meeting Barb he would drive up from his night job at UPS to visit her at all hours. I have a picture of the two of you in front in front of the apartment where I lived with Sharon and Sharon who were also in the communications department to prove this, but I can't figure out how to upload it! Anyway, congratulations on a great marriage!
Nancy, your credit is noted. As well it should be. Both in the comments, and in the post. I stole the picture you posted and put it here, too!
Congrats on 31 years! That was a fun day. Enjoy many, many more wonderful years together.
Wow, Glenn...you actually looked "halfway" normal back then. Were you? CONGRATS to you both! I thoroughly enjoy our continuing friendship and contact!
Aahhhhh! Such a trip down memory lane! Ed McConkey my mother wanted me to marry you (because Tom was too short, had a crooked nose, and had no money) and Glenn I had forgotten that your trip to Bethel, Alaska to work with us was helpful to the overall process of you convincing Barb that you were the right guy for her....love does work miracles.

I notice that you two (Barb and Glenn) have not managed to come to Alaska to see us and that is just wrong.....plan an anniversary trip up here next year you two.

Tom & I just had our 35th anniversary. (9/2) ...it's been a long damn time but we're still together :) HE has not been back to Bethel (where we got married in 1975) and I have plans to drag him out there some time soon....it's now a town of 6,000 and has neighborhoods!

Love to you two for you anniversary.......Marilyn

Come see us in Seattle over Thanksgiving week.......we'll be there.
